Exploring Rimini's hinterland

Rimini is sea, fun, amusement parks and night spots, but also history and art.
During a stay in Romagna for a spring holiday week end you can dedicate yourself to the exploration of it's hinterland that is very interesting and with many charming places and sceneries.

Gradara
Romagna, that for centuries was ruled by the Malatesta, still today has hamlets and castle that testimony the antic past of the territory and the history of this family.

Near Rimini, among the most suggestive places to visit there's the antique Republic of San Marino, one of the smallest and most antique countries of the world ; Gradara's castle and town, that is the setting of the tale about Paolo and Francesca narrated in the V canto of Dante Alighieri's Inferno ; San Leo and it's impenetrable fortress ; Montebello with the singular and mysterious story of Azzurrina, a ghost and the lively town of Villa Verucchio.
You then go towards the towns of the Val Conca with the castles of Montefiore Conca, Saludecio, Mondaino and Montegridolfo, Mercatino Conca, Monte Cerignone reaching Macerata Feltria and the 1.400 mt peak of Monte Carpegna and then descending towards beautiful Val Marecchia.

Among the warm hills of Rimini's hinterland, located not far from the sea, silence is predominant and the countryside offers singular naturalistic glimpses : in Onferno's Natural Reserve , the only protected area of the emilia romagna regional system in the province of Rimini.
Onferno's Caves, are one of the most interesting karst caves in the region and is home to a large community of bats.

A few kilometres from Rimini, at the border with the Marche region, Saint Bartholomew park permits you to follow paths on foot, on horseback or by bicycle to explore a beautiful territory : Monte San Bartolo has outcrops, vallies and steep cliffs overlooking the sea, coves with gravel and pebbles besides the wide sandy beach of Gabicce Mare.

These itineraries show off Rimini and Romagna in a different manner, not the usual way known by most of the public, but something very interesting and suggestive.
