San Benedetto del Tronto
For a long time, the port of San Benedetto was known for the large quantity of fish caught there, but today the town is mainly famous from a tourist point of view and belongs to that part of the Marche coastline called Riviera of the Palms.
San Benedetto is located between the sea and the hills and offers a varied and well-equipped area for every type of holiday.
San Benedetto is divided between a central area and a marina area, where all the main hotels and tourist facilities are located.
The hotels in San Benedetto provide their guests with many services both in their rooms and in the public areas and private beaches, which thanks to the organisation and cleanliness of the water can boast the title of the Blue Flag.
The 3-star hotels offer special services for the comfort of families, entertainment, evening parties and excellent cuisine - try the famous brodetto alla sambenedettesethe typical fish soup that characterises the city's gastronomy.
Among the monuments of St Benedict we report the Gualtieri Tower, which the locals call the Torrione, is the symbol of the city and is one of the most atmospheric places during sunset, thanks also to the illuminated clock.
Then there is the Church of St Benedict the Martyrinside which various works and historical artefacts can be admired, as well as the altar containing the Saint's relics.
The city also hosts several museums, to visit during the holidays to spend a different afternoon or morning: Fish Museum, Amphora Museum, Museum of Sacred Art.
The San Benedetto seafront is famous for the palm trees that line every side of the street and it is thanks to this that the entire locality belongs to the area known as the Riviera delle Palme. Excellent for quiet evening strolls between shops and entertainment venues, there is also a cycle path along the seafront for those who prefer to travel by bicycle.
Walking to the south quay of the harbour, you will notice the Monument to the Fishermanone of the symbols of the town's seafaring traditions, and the monument to the seagull Jonathan, a tribute to the tenacity and generosity of the inhabitants of San Benedetto.
Among the main events of the tourist season is the feast of the Madonna della Marina in July, where in addition to the procession at sea with traditional fishing boats, a flowered wreath is thrown into the water to remember all the people who lost their lives at sea. The evening continues with food standsmusic and fireworks.
During the warm hours it is pleasant to take a bike ride with mum and dad under the palm trees and along the waterfront cycle paths.
In addition, San Benedetto offers the starting point for very interesting excursions: inland there are many villages, festivals and folk festivals, parks, reserves and museums.
The parks allow visitors to discover evocative places surrounded by nature and full of charm. To the amazement of adults and children alike, a visit to the underground complex of the Frasassi Caves is definitely an experience to be had.
